La Guichardière, Airvault
In the quiet countryside of western France, just outside the historic town of Airvault, lies La Marysette, a small stone property surrounded by fields, orchards and open farmland. Located in the hamlet of La Guichardière, the property reflects the traditional architecture of the region, where rural buildings of limestone and timber have stood for generations. Airvault itself is a town with deep history, known for its Romanesque abbey church of Saint Pierre, founded in the early Middle Ages.
For many years La Marysette has been part of family life in this landscape. Time has been spent here across seasons and generations, and the house has long been a place associated with family gatherings, countryside summers and the quiet rhythm of rural life.
In recent years the property has entered a new chapter. The aim has been to carefully restore and renew the buildings while preserving the character that makes the place what it is. Rather than transforming it into something entirely new, the work has focused on respecting the original stone architecture and allowing the property to continue welcoming people as it has always done.
The property is organised around two buildings facing each other across the grounds. On one side stands the main house, and on the other La Grange, the former barn.
La Grange has been carefully restored into a large open space of around 70 square metres. Thick stone walls run the full length of the room, and the height of the roof reveals an impressive timber structure above. Massive wooden beams span the ceiling, giving the space a sense of both warmth and scale.
The interior remains open and flexible, easily accommodating long tables for shared meals and celebrations. A modern kitchen area allows meals to be prepared and served directly within the space, and the barn is equipped with its own bathroom facilities including a shower. Above part of the room sits a wooden mezzanine sleeping area, offering views across the entire barn and emphasising the height and openness of the structure.
Across the grounds, the main house is currently being renovated into a comfortable countryside home. Once completed it will offer around 100 square metres of living space with three bedrooms and a large open plan kitchen and living area centred around a fireplace. High ceilings and exposed beams will give the interior a sense of space, while large floor to ceiling windows open the house toward the surrounding fields and bring natural light deep into the living area.
Together the house and La Grange form a small rural ensemble that reflects both the heritage of the place and its continuing role as a setting for gatherings, celebrations and time spent in the countryside.
La Marysette remains above all a family home in the landscape of Airvault, a place shaped by memories of the past and gradually being prepared for the years ahead.
